Beginner Success Guide

01. The Bed is Holy

Cleanliness = Adhesion

90% of beginner issues are caused by finger oils. When you touch your build plate, you leave invisible grease that plastic cannot bond to.

THE SOAP RULE: Stop using just rubbing alcohol. It often just smears grease around. Once a week, take your build plate to the sink and wash it with warm water and Dawn dish soap. Dry it with a lint-free cloth and never touch the top surface again.

02. Mastering the "Squish" (Z-Offset)

The "Z-Offset" is the distance between your nozzle and the bed. If it's wrong, your print is doomed before it starts.

TOO HIGH
Lines are round, gaps between rows, print peels off.

PERFECT
Lines are flat, touching each other, smooth to the touch.

TOO LOW
Nozzle plows through plastic, rough texture, "transparent" layers.

How to Tune on the Fly

Don't rely on the "Paper Test" alone. Start your print with a Skirt (3-4 loops). While the skirt is printing, look closely. If the lines look like round spaghetti, lower your Z-offset in 0.02mm increments until the lines are flat and merged.

03. The Beginner Slicer Profile

Don't touch advanced settings yet. Stick to these verified defaults for your first 10 prints:

Layer Height: 0.2mm (The "Magic" Number for 0.4mm nozzles).
Wall Count: 3 (Ensures strength and hides internal infill).
Infill: 15% Gyroid (Never use Grid; it causes nozzle collisions).
Build Plate Adhesion: Use a Brim (5mm) for models with small footprints to prevent tipping.

04. Filament Maintenance

Dry Filament is Happy Filament

Filament acts like a sponge for humidity. Even a "brand new" roll can arrive wet from the factory. If you hear "popping" sounds or see "zits" on your print, your filament has absorbed water.

The Solution: Store your spools in a dry box with silica gel packets, or invest in a $40 dedicated filament dryer.

05. The Pre-Flight Checklist

Is the build plate washed with soap and water?
Is the filament dry and moving freely on the spool?
Is the nozzle clean of old "ooze"?
Is your Z-offset calibrated for the "Perfect Squish"?
Are your cooling fans clear of dust and debris?

06. First Print by Printer — Quick Start

Every printer has a slightly different first-print experience. Here's what to do in the first 30 minutes on the most popular machines in the Drafted Dreams community.

🟣 Bambu Lab (X1C / P1S / A1 Mini)

First 30 Minutes

Run Calibration → Auto Calibration from the touchscreen. Let it complete fully (12–15 min).
Load filament through the slicer (BambuStudio) — don't use manual load for first time.
Download a simple benchy or calibration cube, slice on the Generic PLA profile, send to printer.
Watch the first 3 layers. If lines aren't merging, adjust Live Z from the touchscreen. ±0.1mm increments.

No manual bed leveling needed — Bambu does it automatically ✓

🟠 Prusa (MK4 / MK4S / Mini+)

First 30 Minutes

Navigate to Calibration → First Layer Calibration. This runs the calibration grid print.
While the grid prints, use the knob to adjust Live Adjust Z. Target: lines flat and touching.
Save the value. Print the bundled test file from the SD card — it's well-chosen for first-timers.
If print lifts at corners: lower bed temp by 5°C first. Add a brim second. Clean bed with IPA last.

Prusa's first layer wizard is the most beginner-friendly in FDM printing ✓

🟡 Creality (Ender 3 / K1 / K2)

First 30 Minutes

Ender 3: Manual level all 4 corners with a sheet of paper. Do the center after. Do it again. Bed leveling takes 10 minutes for beginners — it's normal.
K1/K2: Run the auto-leveling wizard. It's fast and accurate. Then print the test file on the screen — it's a good first calibration check.
If the first layer looks like spaghetti on Ender 3: Z-offset is too high. Turn the nozzle offset screw counterclockwise 30 degrees at a time while printing.

Budget the most time for bed leveling if you have an Ender 3. It's worth it. ✓
